Growing Beard in Islam

Ibn `Umar said,

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, ‘Do the opposite of what the pagans do. Keep the beards and cut the moustaches short.’

[Sahih al-Bukhari 5892, 5893] [Sahih Muslim 259, 260] [Tirmidhi 2763, 2764] [Nasa’i 15] [Sahih]

A’isha (R.A) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Ten are the acts according to fitra: clipping the moustache, letting the beard grow, …

[Sahih Muslim 261] [Tirmidhi 2757] [Sahih]

Narrated Abd Allah b. ‘Umar:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded to clip the moustaches and grow the beard long.

[Sunan Abu Dawud 4199] [Sahih]

And Allah(s.w.t) says in the glorious Al-Quran:

“Whatever the Messenger gives you, accept it and from whatever he forbids you (from doing) keep back”

(Surah al-Hashr 59:7)

Did the Prophets had beard?

Letting the beard grow is the way of the Messengers.

Allah says of Haroon that he said to his brother Musa (interpretation of the meaning):

“O son of my mother, do not seize [me] by my beard or by my head. Indeed, I feared that you would say, ‘You caused division among the Children of Israel, and you did not observe [or await] my word.'”

[Al-Quran 20:94]

This informs us that Haroon (A.S) had beard.

Conclusion

It is proven from the sound hadiths that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded men to leave the beard alone and let it grow naturally.

So, we should cut the moustaches short and grow the beard.

And Allah(s.w.t) knows best.

And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers – We will give him what he has taken and drive him into Hell, and evil it is as a destination.

[Al-Quran 4:115]
